History of NFS

A brief look at how we got here.

In October 2007, 20 families and prospective families met in London for the first ‘New Family Social’ event – after it became apparent that there was a need for LGBT adopters and foster carers to support each other. New Family Social is now widely recognised as the UK support group for LGBT adopters and foster carers.

New Family Social now boasts some 5,000 LGBT+ adopter and foster carer members from across the UK. The charity provides support on behalf of regional adoption agencies, local authorities and independent adoption and fostering agencies. These agencies pay an annual subscription which allows their LGBT+ applicants, adopters and foster cares to access New Family  Social's online services free-of-charge.

With active regional groups across the UK and a secure, busy online members’ area New Family Social is both a well-established peer support network and a credible voice for LGBT+ adopters and foster carers. Its annual campaigns include LGBT+ Adoption & Fostering Week, which in 2020 reached some 23 million people through its Twitter postings alone. Since the campaign was founded adoptions by same-sex couples rose by 2019 to 1 in 7 in England, 1 in 8 in Wales and in Scotland the actual number doubled in three years.

New Family Social also arranges national family events, with some 130 LGBT+ parented families attending its four day camping festival in 2019.

This website represents the third iteration of the charity's online services, with more functionality than ever before. A mobile app is planned for launch in 2020 as is a Champions programme, which will recognise the extra support some members give to New Family Social.
