COURSE : LGBTQ+ Adoption & Fostering

How our online and in-person courses help you connect, assess and engage your LGBTQ+ clients

Practitioners and panel members need to be aware of the skills that LGBTQ+ people bring to adoption and fostering - and the outcomes for children placed with LGBTQ+ carers - so that agencies assess, prepare and support LGBTQ+ people effectively and meet its legal duties. New Family Social offers one day courses – that are interactive and full of genuinely useful information. We can also provide off-the-peg and bespoke training packages for agencies across the UK. You can contact us about bespoke courses by using this form.

Know your heterosexual from your heteroflexible? Or the difference between pansexual or demisexual? LGBTQ+ people now form a vital pool of potential adoption and fostering applicants - but working effectively with them means understanding the nuance of different gender identities and sexual orientations.

This interactive course for professionals is your opportunity to ask questions and understand the routes LGBTQ+ individuals and couples take to adoption and fostering. You'll also learn how your agency's existing practices - or staff - may unintentionally damage your relationship with potential applicants and existing adoptive parents or foster carers.

The course covers UK law, together with the LGBTQ+ experiences, LGBTQ+ parenting, and relevant research.

Participants will gain an understanding of the lived experiences of LGBTQ+ people and the impact of anticipated discrimination on their approach to the process. It'll also highlight some of key areas of improvement reported by LGBTQ+ adopters and foster carers in our research series.

This course can be delivered focusing solely on adoption or fostering.

By the end of the course participants will :

  • Understand the sexual orientations lesbian, gay, bisexual, pansexual, heteroflexible
  • Understand asexuality including aromantic, demisexual, ace and grey-sexual identities
  • Understand Queer as an identity
  • Understand the gender identities/expressions transgender, non-binary, intersex, cross-dresser
  • Understand the interplay between identity, behaviour and desire
  • Know basic LGBTQ+ history and how that affects LGBTQ+ adopters/foster carers today
  • Understand the Equality Act, Gender Recognition Act, relevant case law and how these apply to their work
  • Be aware of current research about the lived day-to-day experiences of LGBTQ+ people
  • Understand the impact of prejudice, stereotyping and heteronormative expectations on the LGBTQ+ community, specifically on LGBTQ+ adopters and foster carers
  • Understand why LGBTQ+ people are crucial for adoption and fostering, including an examination of all current research relating to LGBTQ+ adoption and fostering
  • Understand the outcomes for children placed in LGBTQ+ families
  • Have heard personal stories from LGBTQ+ adopters and foster carers
  • Know how to apply their learning to their role (this section covers recruitment, assessment, matching, panels, family finding and ongoing support)
  • Understand benefits of New Family Social membership and how they, and their LGBT+ adopters and foster carers, can use our services
